Which foods need to be avoided?
Certain food items should be fine when you are not pregnant. But once you are, your immune system undergoes a lot of changes, which make you particularly vulnerable to food borne illnesses. Subtle symptoms such as an upset stomach can mean highly serious, ranging from dehydration to miscarriage.
Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause fever and vomiting, may happily reside on uncooked eggs. Watch out if you are devouring eggs in any form uncooked, such as Caesar dressing, raw cookie dough, soft scrambled or homemade eggnog. Eggs become safe after cooking and the risk gets mitigated completely.
Juice that has not undergone pasteurization, a process that kills bacteria as well as removes toxins, can lead to complications during pregnancy. Hence you need to make it a point to consume only such juice that has been pasteurized.

Fish is known to be excellent Omega-3 fatty acids which help in development of brain cells. However, excessive pollution has made the favorite food of many extremely dangerous due to high mercury content. Long living fish such as tilefish, shark and swordfish happen to accumulate a lot of mercury, thereby posing a risk to the unborn. Considering this, you may want to avoid them completely during your childbearing years.
